I am a SF Bar Pilot and this method is definitely the safest way for us to disembark at our offshore pilot station. Sliding down the man rope the last several feet keeps the pilot from stepping directly across to the boat from the ladder. In foul weather the boat can heave up and down quite a bit, making that step across more dangerous. One can control the decent on a man rope quite nicely with a good pair of gloves and practice. We only use a man rope when disembarking ships.

Wind was blowing strong from the NE and the waves were becoming bigger and bigger by the time we reach a new client.
Crew didn't consider the rolling effect about to happen while changing heading in order to give lee when they prepared pilot ladder, so the requested 1.5m above the water was not that good.
I decided to abort and to give the vessel the chance to shorten it. In the next attempt they did it right and I was able to board safe

Here’s a nice video of the ‘Independent Vision’ having her pilot embarked offshore by the Cork pilot boat ‘Failte’ an Interceptor 48 before she enters Cork Harbour. We also undertook some alongside handling trials at the same time with ‘San Cibrao’ before she is shipped to Spain. Sure was interesting trying to land the drone back on the boat in the 40kt winds offshore!
