What is a Portable Pilot Unit (PPU)?

by TRENZ GmbH - published on 1 April 2024 7226 -

A portable pilot unit (PPU) is a portable navigation aid system designed specifically for ship pilots, such as the SIRIUS series from TRENZ in Germany (www.trenz-ppu.com). These units typically consist of a rugged laptop or tablet equipped with specialized software and hardware to provide real-time navigation data. PPUs offer a range of features that assist pilots in safely guiding ships into harbors or through narrow waterways. Here are some key features and benefits of a PPU:
  • Real-time Navigation Data: PPUs provide real-time information about the ship's position, speed, and course. They receive data from onboard systems such as GPS, AIS (Automatic Identification System), and gyroscopes.
  • Advanced Chart Display: They display detailed electronic navigational charts (ENCs), which are regularly updated to provide accurate information on depths, shoals, and navigational aids.
  • Maneuvering Support: PPUs help in planning and executing complex maneuvers by visualizing key parameters such as pivot points, speed vectors, and safe distances from obstacles.
  • Safety: By providing precise and up-to-date information, PPUs enhance safety by reducing the risk of collisions and groundings.
  • Independence: PPUs operate independently of the ship's onboard navigation systems, offering pilots an additional, reliable source of navigation information.
  • Portability: Since they are portable, pilots can easily carry their PPUs from one ship to another, making their work more flexible and efficient.
An example of a PPU is the TRENZ Pilot Unit SIRIUS developed by TRENZ GmbH, which serves as an advanced tool to support pilot operations.

By utilizing a PPU, pilots can perform their tasks more efficiently and safely, which is crucial for both maritime navigation and environmental protection.

I recently presented the OpenBridge design system at the Design System Day 2020 in Oslo. I talked about what OpenBridge is, how it differs from other design systems and where we are heading.
The conference was moved online due to the Corona virus, so I had to record the presentation using my mobile phone, and get Jon Olav from the lab to add the slides. So - apologize for the home quality of the presentation, but I hope you enjoy learning more about our work!
