Artemis Technologies, headquartered in Northern Ireland, has announced that Noatum Maritime, a subsidiary of AD Ports Group, will acquire a fully electric Artemis EF-12 Foiling Pilot Boat for pilotage operations in the United Arab Emirates.

This acquisition forms part of a broader sustainability-driven investment by Noatum, which also includes the procurement of two Damen RSD-E all-electric harbour tugs for service at Khalifa Port.

“By investing in zero-emission pilotage and harbor operations, Noatum Maritime is delivering a cleaner more efficient solution that reduces the environmental footprint of port operations, drives long term cost savings and also benefits our customers," said Captain Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster, AD Ports Group.

“By offering fully electric alternatives we are supporting our customers sustainability goals and potentially enabling them to leverage carbon credits. In pioneering these technologies, we are reinforcing our commitment to sustainable innovation and setting new benchmarks for the industry.”
The EF-12 Pilot supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy. Featuring advanced battery propulsion, the vessel achieves zero emissions during operation.

Utilizing Artemis’ proprietary eFoiler technology, the EF-12 transitions onto hydrofoils at speed, reducing hydrodynamic drag and wake, increasing energy efficiency, and improving onboard comfort and stability. The vessel delivers a top speed of 30 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots, meeting operational demands for rapid pilot transfer while minimizing environmental impact.

“We are proud to support Noatum Maritime in their continued efforts to bring sustainable maritime solutions to the Middle East,” said Artemis Technologies CEO Dr. Ian Percy.

“The acquisition of the Artemis EF-12 Pilot boat marks a significant milestone in addressing the region’s growing demand for high-performance, zero operational emission vessels. Our Artemis eFoiler technology is setting new standards in the global maritime industry, offering energy-efficient vessels that produce zero emissions in operation and helping to enhance operational efficiency. We look forward to working together to bring clean maritime technology to revolutionize to their maritime operations across the United Arab Emirates.”

The Artemis EF-12 represents a next-generation platform in pilotage craft design, combining sustainability with uncompromised performance for demanding port environments.

Video 2006 Port of London Pilot Capt. Tom Miller - Hebridean Princess

published on 22 November 2023

In 2006 I was invited to join Port of London Pilot Capt. Tom Miller on one of his last few voyages before his retirement. A pilot cutter ferried us from the Gravesend Port office to the Port of London Terminal where the Hebridean Spirit waited for us to board. Once aboard, the ship's captain manoeuvred the vessel off its moorings and into the channel. After handing the vessel over to Capt. Miller, the Captain joined the ship's company for dinner, and the first offer and a helmsman remained...
