Project enhances understanding of remote pilotage risks

The transfer from traditional to remote pilotage requires particular consideration of safety issues, and Pilotage Act obligates the pilotage company to ensure that the remote pilotage under development is at least as safe as traditional pilotage, affirms Sanna Sonninen, Pilotage Director.

Involvement in the ISTLAB project has provided Finnpilot with a better understanding of the change in data requirements of the pilots and of the vessel’s crew, and of the changes in the risks involved.

The project’s simulator environment will enable us to develop future remote pilotage processes and operations with a relatively low threshold. From the remote pilotage standpoint, the simulator environment also allows critical operations to be tested, states Tero Vainio, Head of Technology at Finnpilot.

From the point of view of remote pilotage development, the laboratory tests in the project were extremely successful. The tests produced cost-effective, quantifiable results from processes that have not yet been tested in the real world. The findings from the tests will allow us to significantly develop remote pilotage processes and operations.

The project created a laboratory environment, which with a low threshold allows for rapid failures and draws the attention towards solutions that have true potential to produce added value for maritime actors. Remote pilotage development is advancing at a fast pace, and the laboratory environment brings low-threshold testing to the simulations. It is our hope to be able to construct a remote pilotage environment according to the remote pilotage vision of the future, Vainio continues.

Article Port of Townsville to expand pilot boat fleet

The Port of Townsville, northern Australia’s largest multi-cargo port, is expanding its fleet of pilot boats to four.

The Port has awarded Hart Marine a $3 million contract to build a 17.3m ORC vessel that is due for delivery later in 2020. The new high-tech vessel will be slightly longer but have the same design features as the PV Osprey which was delivered by Hart Marine in late 2017.

Rostock; 02.05.2020: Actually, the special ship with the giant heavy-lift crane crane, which was designed for over 5,000 tons load capacity, was supposed to be delivered in the next few days. During final tests the crane broke off in the afternoon of May 2. Four people were injured in the accident. This is the second accident with Liebherr cranes this year in the Rostock overseas port. Already in February this year two cranes were reported to have fallen into the water during loading....

Article Delaware Pilots Order New Launch from Gladding-Hearn

The Pilots’ Association of the Bay and River Delaware have ordered another pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. It’s the pilots’ association’s fourth Chesapeake Class launch and eleventh pilot boat built by the Somerset, Mass., shipyard since 1957. Delivery of the new pilot boat is scheduled for 2024.
