Kiel Canal is reopened for shipping after collision (1th Dec 2022)

Effects on shipping traffic:

  • The Kiel Canal was reopened without restrictions for shipping traffic in both directions on Wednesday evening.
  • In the meantime, more than 30 ships were waiting, according to the Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA).
  • Dozens of ships heading for Kiel were also stuck in the canal.
  • In Brunsbüttel (Dithmarschen district) and Kiel-Holtenau, no more ships were allowed into the canal in the meantime. According to the WSA, one ship was stuck in the Brunsbüttel lock.
  • Several ships have taken the alternative route around Skagen because of the temporary closure.

Video Suez canal blocked: attempts continue to free stuck megaship Ever Given

Efforts to free the giant container ship are continuing after the 400m-long vessel became stuck in the Suez canal. Local authorities attempted to dislodge the 220,000 ton vessel from the banks of the canal using tug boats, but the megaship remains stuck more than one day after it ran aground.

Within this region, the Authority has designated 17 compulsory pilotage areas.

Port authorities in Antwerp, Belgium, are making use of EMSA’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) to support their day-to-day monitoring of port operations and rapid response to pollution incidents in the port area. The RPAS will enable the authorities to inspect at a distance their complex port environment which extends over an area of some 120km².
