Video Successful overtaking of another ship in a canal - Port Revel Shiphandling
Found on YouTube. Created by "Port Revel". From 2014...
Manoeuvring large ships at close quarters and on shallow water is one of the most difficult aspects of shiphandling because of the complex hydraulic interactions depending on the ships' speeds, on the water depth and on lateral restrictions like in canals. Training is conducted both on meeting and on overtaking ships in shallow waters. This video shows how overtaking in a canal should be conducted: come in close to the stern and then move away from the bow that will be sucked towards your ship.

The American P&I Club’s Loss Prevention team is dedicated to protecting the most valuable resource the maritime industry has – the human resource! Earlier this year, the Club hosted local Members, pilots, and industry experts in New York City for a round table discussion entitled “Safe Boarding of Vessels”. Participants discussed boarding procedures and boarding equipment on various types of vessels and solutions for reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls.
In this video, Danielle Centeno – Vice President, Loss Prevention/Survey Compliance – discusses three keys to safe boarding that came out of that session.
For more on safe boarding – and many more safety-related topics – please see the Loss Prevention section of the Club’s website:

Opinion Positioning of vessel at berth by using bridge wing gyro repeater
by Capt. Girish Chandra - published on 14 April 2020
Today I will discuss a very simple and useful practical trick often used by pilots.
When we have to berth a vessel with small clearances forward and aft (say 20 to 25 mtr fwd and aft) it is very essential that you are able to estimate your position. Now most of the time you have a berthing supervisor on jetty who will help you with position.
