The role of a Marine Pilot is one of the most skilled and demanding jobs in the maritime industry. Working in all conditions, Pilots safely guide vessels into and out of port, protecting lives, cargo and critical infrastructure. It is a role that carries significant responsibility and, at times, real hazards.
We're proud to shine a light on this vital profession and the extensive training that underpins it. In this video, Dover Harbour Board Chairman, Jason Holt, visits the Maritime Safety Academy, which has created the first recognised “UKMPA Endorsement for Pilot Ladder Safety Training Course”.
Jason experienced first-hand elements of the specialist training developed in partnership with the Port of Dover. Together, we are committed to ensuring that safety remains at the heart of everything we do and that our seafarers and Pilots are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to operate safely.
Every ship that arrives safely in Dover has a story behind it – and often, that story begins with a Pilot stepping aboard. Their expertise, courage and training help keep Britain's busiest port moving, safely and efficiently, every hour of every day.
