What Happens Inside America's Most Dangerous Waterway? Columbia River Bar Pilots

One of the most dangerous waterways in the world: the point where Oregon's Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. Known as the "Graveyard of the Pacific," more than 2,000 ships have sunk in this treacherous area. Only 14 captains have the skill to safely navigate this hazardous shallow passage, they are known as "bar pilots."

This documentary follows these pilots as they board massive cargo ships by helicopter and guide them safely through deadly currents, 7-8 meter waves, and storm-force winds. Their job doesn't end with steering the ship; once their task is complete, they must leave the moving vessel, sometimes by hanging from a helicopter, sometimes by climbing down an icy rope ladder, or jumping onto a small boat in extreme conditions.

During their 15-day shifts, the captains face helicopter malfunctions, sudden blizzards, collision risks in narrow channels, and the constant danger of falling into near-freezing waters. Because if this port shuts down, billions of dollars in trade across the Pacific Northwest of the United States would come to a halt.

This is a real-life story of courage, experience, and survival.
