Port of Waterford to invest almost €1 m in new ‘Port Láirge’ pilot boat

The Port of Waterford is to invest almost €1m in a new pilot boat to be named Port Láirge, which as Irish for Waterford is a name long associated with a steam-powered dredger that served Waterford for more than 70 years until the 1980s.

The 15-metre long boat will provide safer working conditions for pilotage personnel. Youghal, Co Cork-based Safehaven Marine won a tendering process to design and build the new boat which will be fitted with the latest marine safety technology.

The new boat is due to come into use in September 2021.

Capt Darren Doyle, Harbourmaster, Port of Waterford, said: “We look forward to the new Port Láirge being brought into service next year. Our pilot boat crew and pilots do vitally important work year-round and it is essential that they have the best possible vessel to operate from.”

Video Pilot boat Lesath in rough sea brings pilot to Container ship

The pilot boat Lesath brings the harbor pilot to the Allegro. It was windy and the sea was rough, the conditions where not extremely, but the boarding is not whitout risk.
This video is created 2 days after storm Ciara in the Port of Rotterdam. This was also the first day that the containerterminals where open after the storm.

Opinion Sea Trials in Stroms at the Entrance to Cork Habour

The entrance to Cork Harbour situated on the South coast of Ireland can produce some pretty extreme sea states during the winter storm months. There are two main factors that influence the sea state at the entrance, the first being the ebbing tide, the second being shoaling waters over the Harbour Rock, this is situated at the entrance to the Harbour off Roches Point lighthouse, right in the middle between the Western and Eastern channel entrances.
