P&O Maritime Logistics welcomes new pilot boat to fleet

UAE-based P&O Maritime Logistics recently took delivery of a new pilot boat built by Safehaven Marine of Ireland.

P&O Sahm is the fifth pilot boat to be acquired by P&O Maritime Logistics from the same builder. It will be operated out of Port Rashid in Dubai.

The 18.5-metre, FRP-hulled boat has seating for 12 pilots and can reach speeds of up to 35 knots. Safehaven Marine said the boat enjoys greater economy due to a longer planing area in addition to having self-righting ability and safe, predictable "alongside ship" handling characteristics.

The hull is of a deep V, twin chine, semi-displacement design providing excellent seakeeping especially in areas where tidal influences introduce dangerous breaking seas. The design is capable of operating safely in all weather conditions up to and including Storm force 10 to 11 and wave heights up to eight metres.

The boat has a high bow with plenty of freeboard forward and amidships while the superstructure is positioned well aft for crew comfort.

Here’s some cool video footage we captured of the Cork Pilots in their Interceptor 48 pilot boat ‘Failte’ undertaking pilot transfers off Cork Harbour during the recent days of strong SE gales. Roches Point lighthouse recorded 50kts of wind on the 13th as the Cosco bulk carrier passed and the Cork wave buoy 2nm off the harbour entrance recorded waves to 6.7m at the time. The pilot boat coxwain managed to get alongside and safely disembark the pilot despite the challenging sea state....

Jacobsen Pilot Service and Los Angeles Pilot Station published a notice to all ships to inspect pilot ladders before the pilot boards.

Reason is an incident happened at the port of long beach in July 2020. Pilot ladder rope broke while the pilot was on the ladder - luckily the pilot was able to hold on.
