by Marine-Pilots.com - published on 3 June 2021 817 -

According to media reports from Taiwan, a collision between an OOCL vessel and a Gantry Crane occurred today (03.06.2021).

Video surfaced on social media in Taiwan showing a dramatic container crane collapsing and dock workers running for their lives at the Port of Kaohsiung:
At 11 a.m. on Thursday, police received a report that a dockside gantry crane had collapsed at container yard Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. at the Port of Kaohsiung's Pier 70, reported TVBS. Prior to the accident, a container ship operated by OOCL, was seen lurching dangerously close to the dock before colliding into a container crane.

Fortunately, there was only one casualty; two workers were trapped in the collapsed crane and were freed uninjured.

Incidents in which a vessel collides with a gantry crane and brings it down have occurred frequently in the past. For example, a similar disaster occurred in the port of Busan (South Korea) in April 2020.
