If you’ve ever wondered how the giant ships make their way through the challenging waters of Penobscot Bay and Penobscot River, this presentation will answer those questions. Captain David Gelinas will discuss the history of the Pen Bay Pilots and how the Maine's State Pilotage System is practiced on Penobscot Bay. He will also share stories about Captain Bill Abbott who mentored him when he became a pilot.

This online presentation complements the exhibit “Up River: Selection from the Captain Bill Abbott Collection” on display in April 2022 at the Camden Public Library and afterward at the Penobscot Marine Museum. The Captain Bill Abbott Collection of vintage maritime photographs is housed at the Penobscot Marine Museum. To learn more about the museum, visit penobscotmarinemuseum.org.
