An investigation is underway following a collision between "Florence Spirit" and "Alanis" in the Welland Canal.
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday near Port Robinson when the dry bulk cargo ship "Alanis", which was carrying windmill parts to Duluth, Minnesota, collided during a passing maneuver with the "Florence Spirit", which was carrying coal on its way to Quebec.
According to the "Welland Tribune", the Florence Spirit was heading down the canal while the MV Alanis was heading up the canal just south of Port Robinson when the accident happened.
A St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation official told the Tribune that the two vessels collided starboard side to starboard side, adding that the Florence Spirit sustained more damage because it was sitting lower in the water.
The Alanis was carrying windmill parts to Deluth, Minnesota, and the Florence Spirit was carrying coal to Quebec.
No one was injured in the crash and no cargo was spilled.
The collision did not interrupt traffic on the canal.
Both ships were towed to two different locations. The Alanis is currently docked at Port Colborne while the Florence Spirit is docked in Thorold.
We're working to gather more information about the incident.

For people in Europe and in the days of a general me-too debate, it may seem a little strange that a male captain meets a female pilot and seems to ignite a romance.
There must be many more female pilots, but cooperation on the bridge must be professional, especially from the male colleagues.
I am sure that the creators of the video want to show that it is unprofessional if the captain and the pilot do not fully concentrate on their important work.

Video How not to climb down a Pilot Ladder
The video was found on some social media channels in June 2020.
When so many elementary mistakes are made and so many risks are taken, this is exactly what can happen!
It's a demonstrative example of an unprofessional action:
1) Where is the life jacket?
2) No backpack on the shoulders. Use a rope to have the backpack lifted by the deck crew.
3) Where is the rest of the crew (on vessel / on the small boat) for safe assistance?
What other mistakes have you discovered?
We do not put videos of accidents on our website out of voyeurism. We would like to point out that the work of a pilot or a seafarer is always dangerous, especially when embarking and disembarking!
These incidents should be a warning. It can hit anyone out of carelessness.
Dear people, please always be mindful and always think of your safety!
We hope no one was seriously injured.
Video Failed overtaking of another ship in a canal - Port Revel Shiphandling
Found on YouTube. Created by "Port Revel". From 2014...
Manoeuvring large ships at close quarters and on shallow water is one of the most difficult aspects of shiphandling because of the complex hydraulic interactions depending on the ships' speeds, on the water depth and on lateral restrictions like in canals. Training is conducted both on meeting and on overtaking ships in shallow waters. This video shows how overtaking in a canal can easily fail.

The Port of Townsville, northern Australia’s largest multi-cargo port, is expanding its fleet of pilot boats to four.
The Port has awarded Hart Marine a $3 million contract to build a 17.3m ORC vessel that is due for delivery later in 2020. The new high-tech vessel will be slightly longer but have the same design features as the PV Osprey which was delivered by Hart Marine in late 2017.
