The ship could not slow down and sailed against the Old North Lock - “Alte Schleuse Nord”.

On Sunday evening (17/05/2020) around 10 pm, a collision occurred on the Kiel Canal in Brunsbüttel. The Dutch freighter "Rimini" (85m, IMO 9421635) collided with the Old Lock North and severely damaged it.

The crew could not stop the freighter
According to the water police in Brunsbüttel, the background is not yet fully clarified. It is assumed that the crew had had problems reversing the engine system. The ship could not brake sufficiently to avoid a collision.

The crew still dropped anchor to reduce speed.

The freighter finally hit the lock at a speed of about three knots. The collision caused only slight damage to the ship.
RIMINI is or was en route from Rotterdam to Rostock with ETA May 19.

RIMINI suffered hull damages in stb fore area.

High damage to lock chamber
The inner sluice gates have been damaged to such an extent that they can no longer be opened. During the repair of the lock chamber, it cannot be used. According to a report in the “Kieler Nachrichten”, the damage is estimated at about half a million euros. The investigations are continuing.

The affected lock chamber is out of operation for the time being.
